J’s visit ended this weekend. It ended on a sore note…after 3 hours of kayaking around Harbor Island my shoulders were sore, my back was sore, and my arms were burnt. It was great hosting her and I hope she had fun. Now it’s back to some semblance of normalcy – at least for a week. End of next week we’re off to New York for my cousin’s wedding and to visit both sides of the family – definately going to be a busy trip. I just hope the temperature comes down a little.
Part of the new normal, is a change in Tuesday activities. At least for the next couple months and most likely going forward. Having agreed to join D for a triathalon, I have started swimming laps at the Pro Club on Tuesdays. However, I still need to figure out how to get more than one day a week of training in. A coworker offered his jogging stroller when I was pregnant, so I think I’m going to talk to him about that this week. Then, on the days when I come straight home, I’ll spend some days jogging with him and some days leaving him with daddy while I go biking around the neighborhood.
However, I do need to figure out how to go back to gaming one night a week. Ari wants to start his Tu/Th bike rides again. While I’m training, that’s easy – in fact, I take advantage of it and spend some time with Simeon in the family pool – he love’s the water! I like the idea of continuing the Tuesday night swiming with him, but don’t want to permanently give up games. I also don’t want Ari to give up using the vanpool 3 times a week – especially with gas so high right now. Ari and I definitely need to figure this one out together.
Simeon Stuff
He’s got 2 teeth, but you wouldn’t know it with his tounge always sticking out. Yawning or laughing is the only way to get him to show them…and then only briefly. I’m still waiting for him to start waking up at night. I was talking to another mother as I was heading into the daycare one morning who confirmed what I heard from somebody else – the first tooth is usually not too bad, but they start getting fussy with the rest of them.
While I’m updating, I have to share what I, as a proud mother, consider an act of brilliance on the part of my son.
I generally give Simeon a toy or two to keep him occupied in his car seat should he stay awake on the ride. This morning was one of those days when he stayed awake the entire 45 minute drive to work. He was very happy to have his ladybug toy (given to us by D & J) which consists of a ladybug and a couple other items connected to a ring. I had not even gotten halfway to work when Simeon was getting quite upset. After glancing back a couple times, I finally noticed the ladybug ring was around Simeon’s leg and he was very frustrated that he couldn’t raise it to his mouth. I was looking for a good exit, even considering just pulling onto the shoulder of the Interstate when I looked back to find a less frustrated boy with the toy near his ankle and concentrating on getting it around his foot. Moments later I heard a happy boy playing with his toy again.
How cool is that?! At 9 months old he not only understood why he couldn’t get the toy up to his mouth, but even figured out how to fix the problem. My boy is a genius! 🙂

It’s fun to play tourist guide – you sometimes see and do things you otherwise wouldn’t do – either never finding the time, or taking advantage of the fact they’re in your backyard.
On Friday, we spent most of the day jet skiing around Lake Sammamish. I believe this is the third year Ari’s group held their picnic here and I was excited to finally get the chance to use the jet skis. I was impressed when I noticed J had a sunburn…it’s supposed to be in the hundred’s in Kansas. I guess everybody is staying inside with their air conditioners and watching the sun beat down.
On Saturday we had lunch in Black Diamond – a little bakery with a restaurant that Ari found on a biking trip a few years ago – then continued on to the Sunrise area of Mt. Ranier. We planned to hike to the top of both Burroughs Mountains, but once we reached the top of the first one and looked around at the gorgeous gray clouds, we didn’t see much point to climbing the next. Just my luck, going higher would have gotten us above the clouds – but considering Simeon was getting cold and hungry and wanting his diaper changed I don’t regret turning around.
Sunday wet met up with D & J and walked around the Fremont Sunday Market. J & I took a walk after lunch to visit the Fremont Troll, then stopped by to say good bye to D & J before heading to the Ballard Locks. Ari keeps thinking he’s taken me to the locks before, but this was my first time. There was an adorable dog in a lifevest on one of the boats going into Lake Washington – it reminded me of Simeon the way it was working the crowd.
Unfortunately, I have to work this week – though I’m hoping to leave a little early on Friday. The last couple days, J has been touring Seattle proper — Pike’s Market, Ride the Ducks, Space Needle, — and has even been to Alki Beach and Bainbridge Island. Today, her plans were to head North and check out Deception Pass and Whidbey Island. Hopefully, it’s as clear up there as it is from my office. Tomorrow is either Oregon or St. Helens – or so I think. She leaves Saturday early evening, and I’m hoping we have time to go kayaking around the arboretum.
Well, time to get back to work.

Don’t know how high it reached yesterday, but I saw 99 degrees on Saturday. And what better way to stay cool then spend a lot of time in the water.
Saturday, while Ari helped a friend bike shop, I took Simeon to the Pro Club for some swimming in the nice heated pool. Then, Ari called and asked if I was interested in joining B&B and their friend at a nearby beach. Who am I to argue with more water…so Ari showed up, I changed back into my suit and we headed out to Issaquah. I agreed to join D in a triathalon in September, so I spent a little time practicing…I think I managed to swim 2/5th of a half mile…boy do I have my work cut out for me. B noted she was interested in swimming, so I might change my tuesday activity for a bit in order to not drown in September. After beach time, B&B came over for a nice dinner and some relaxing…we left the lights out all night in hopes the house would seem a little cooler.
Sunday, I was just crazy. After spending 3 hours playing softball in the hot sun (and winning both games!), I came home tired and with a headache…but I couldn’t say no to this hike. So, I took some medicine and napped in the car. 4 miles and 1700 feet later (well, 1300…but that’s after getting up to 1700 and coming back down) the group of us were taking our turns swimming in Snow Lake. The cold spots were really cold, but it was worth it. The shallow water was warm and the water was so refreshingly cool once I got past the initial shock. It was getting dark when we got back to the car, but my headache was pretty much gone. I did take more medicine before going to sleep and I woke up tired but headache-free.
I see Ari posted pictures. Wow…only 149 pictures from the hike.
Tegan Time
Tegan is brave and crazy or just getting old. She’ll walk right up and watch Simeon. Then, Simeon will see her and start scooting toward her as quickly as he can. She doesn’t always move unless I pick her up. I’m trying to teach Simeon to pet, but he’s at the grab and pull stage. Once he reaches out it’s understandably difficult to convince Tegan to stay around while I move his hand in a petting motion. She hasn’t hissed yet…so that’s good.

9-month check up was this afternoon. I knew it was coming, but never received a phone call so I didn’t realize it was today. They only called because I hadn’t changed the appointment and our regular doctor is out until end of August. So, instead, we saw a pediatrician new to the office (as recent as the last couple weeks). I think I’m going to continue taking him to her – not only did I like her, but I’ve been considering looking for a pediatrician anyway.
All is looking good. He’s gained more weight the last couple weeks and I feel more comfortable than I have been. He’s now 17lbs 2 oz. and 2′ 3.5″. If I remember correctly, I think it’s around a 5% gain since 3 weeks ago. The doctor also found his first tooth poking through. Ari said he woke up a little last night (I was so tired I didn’t even hear it). I’ve been trying to look recently, but he’s very good at hiding his bottom gums.
Well, I’m supposed to be sleeping so I can get out of the house in a timely fashion in the morning…until later.
I seem to be getting really behind…not that a lot has happened in the last couple weeks. In fact, I can’t think of anything specific to really mention. I guess the one nice thing was that our friend, C, was kind enough to offer to babysit for us. Ari and I left Simeon in the care of C and K last friday and got to spend a night out. We had dinner at Pomegranate (new for me) and then went to see the Al Gore movie ‘An Inconvient Truth’. What I saw of it was good and informative…unfortunately, a long day and a quiet, dark theater provided a nice sleeping environment.
Another positive is that we finally purchased our tickets for New York in August (not a time of year I would normally recommend for a New York visit, but for family…). We managed to get decent price for 2 non-stop flights – getting in Thursday afternoon and leaving Tuesday afternoon. I definitely learned from last time…non-stop means no switching airlines and if our luggage gets lost there are probably other issues that need to be looked at first.
Tegan Time
Tegan managed to get me good early this week. She was happy when I started brushing her, but then I hit a nasty spot. It’s kind of interesting the way you can see the stretch of her paw in the scratch marks.
Simeon Stuff
Still not quite crawling, but he is definately able to move fast. He’s also very close to feeding himself. He’ll pick up piece of cereal and try to put it in his mouth, but he holds it in a fist and has trouble letting go.
We do have newer pictures…just have to get them off the cameras. Hopefully we can take care of that this weekend.
This past week went fast – and most of it was quite busy too.
Last Saturday, after talking lightly about getting one for years, Ari and I decided to purchase a Sundace hot tub. Aqua Quip was doing a trial run at Costco and we bit…right deal at the right time. I think Ari and I have agreed that we should build a deck to go along with the tub, so now we just have to design it…I think I’m going to talk to my neighbor who used to do architecture (I think she may still consult too). Later that day, we went to Ari’s boss’s house for a bbq. Ari commented about his hot tub and the first words out of L’s mouth was “wish I’d spent the additional money to get a Sundance.” So that was encouraging. He also confirmed what the rep had said…nobody uses the blower, so if you’re questioning it, don’t get it.
Sunday, I had an 11:30 softball game. Ari dropped me off, then went back to Costco to upgrade our membership and make the big purchase – this purchase alone went beyond breaking even on the membership upgrade. After the game, I called Ari and he was on his way back. Rather than sitting next to the field in the hot sun, I decided to walk to the nearby grocery store. I was amused when 2 teammates slowed down, rolled down their windows and asked if I needed a ride…one right after the other. Ari got to the store only a couple minutes before me and after a quick lunch, we met Deb and Jacob at the Greenlake wading pool. We should have the pictures up soon.
The rest of the week started off quite nice with an extended weekend…my office gave me monday and tuesday off. I had planned to actually try to get a little work done on Monday, but Simeon wasn’t feeling well and Ari didn’t have the day off. We did manage to get some cleaning done and felt ready for people Tuesday evening.
On the 4th, we held a barbeque – these pictures will get up when the Greenlake pictures do. Early on, it looked like it would be a small cozy group. By monday the count had doubled from 7 to 15. It was great seeing G & S after so long. Their little boy is so cute :). He was actually quite helpful in pointing out what will need to be childproof very soon. Not long after the last person showed, a group of us decided to go for a walk. On the way back, I ran into some neighbors and found out that their 3-week old son has the same problem that Simeon had and will have the same surgeon. Hopefully, we’ll have them over to the house soon.
The rest of the week flew by. Unfortunately, my work week was shortened even more when I woke up with a migraine yesterday. Aside from an hour or two, in which I barely moved, I slept until about 3:30 in the afternoon. Finally ate around 4 – 4:30 and was finally feeling myself around 6:30.
Wow…I had a lot more to say than I thought.
Tegan Time and Simeon Stuff
Tegan had better beware…Simeon is on the move. He’s not quite crawling, but he will be any day. He has gotten the army crawl down pat. Apparently, yesterday morning, he was on the floor when Tegan walked by and practically crossed the room to get to her. She’s okay getting close enough to watch him, but as soon as he starts moving, so she does she.
The poor boy hasn’t been feeling well this past week. We went to the doctor last weekend – his weight is still not gaining as quicky as we’d like, but his rate of height growth is looking better.

Having gotten behind on posting, I did not note that I started playing softball again!
Last weekend, I discovered just how out of shape I am. After not playing softball for about 1.5 years and not having done much exercising recently, I played a double header. And, of course, I felt it the next two days. Each step hurt. But, I had fun and I’m glad I’m able to play again. You could tell the team was desperate to find a backup pitcher…I opened the second game. I did really great the first inning. I don’t think they scored, and I was pitching hittable balls. Unfortunately, the second inning didn’t go so well…I think I walked everybody in the line up before we found a relief pitcher. But…I started off well, and if I practice, I could do a decent job in a pinch. Final scores: 13-11 win; 16-17 loss.
This weekend Ari went on a Bainbridge bike ride with R and B. Turned out to be an all day thing and I, unfortunately, didn’t get much accomplished with my time alone. M and D invited us on a hike to Little Si, but it was a bit too late for us. So, instead, they stopped by and hung out for a bit after they finished. It was a really nice evening of conversation and a relatively quick game of Lunch Money.
Today was Ari’s first father’s day! Today’s picture is of Simeon’s father’s day gift – hand painted and hand-printed. A last minute invite to some friends in the morning, and we had 6 or 7 people over for an evening bbq. I was happily surprised to see one friend that I haven’t seen for a long time. He has sinced left the job where I last remember him and started working on a documentary about whales. He showed us a bit of his footage and all I can say is…Wow! Swimming with humpback whales no more than 10 feet away…incredible.
Tegan Time
She’s cute. She purrs. She’s soft and fluffy. Not much else to say right now.

Continously increasing his meal options. So far we have tried: rice cereal, avocado, banana, yams, carrots, applesauce, pears, peaches and peas. Soon to come: mashed potato, greenbeans, pineapple (tho I want to double check with the doctor first on this one), squash. We did try cottage cheese a bit…but he didn’t seem to like it after a couple days of trying so we’ve given up for now and will try again at some point.
He’s now been sleeping the night for a couple weeks. Yay!! He usually goes down around 9pm and wakes around 5:30am or 6am. I can deal with that schedule. 🙂

I’m getting behind. Here’s a family photo from a hike this past weekend.
Tegan Time
As cute as ever and needing her nails trimmed. I think she’s just as happy as I am that Simeon’s sleeping at night now. Although she walks right up and expects attention when we’re watching Simeon, her motor runs loud and clear when we go to bed for the night and she can curl up with us.
Simeon Stuff
The solids are continuing well. We’re trying second foods, starting with cottage cheese (which he doesn’t seem to like very much) and next up is canned peas.
As my parents have been asking, yes, he plays with his feet. Though he seems more interested in playing with them than trying to eat them. I’ve never seen him open mouth and insert foot.
I have seen that he’s been getting to his knees a bit, but I didn’t realize just how close he is to crawling until I dropped him off at daycare this morning. He was almost constantly pushing up to his knees and remaining there for a good 2-3 seconds. He’s definitely trying to go forwards, though the most he’s been able to do is scoot back a bit. Looks like Ari and I really need to discuss the first level of babyproofing. Apparently there’s a 9 month old at the daycare that’s already walking (without having skipped the crawling phase) – please don’t go that fast Simeon!
And, as I noted, he’s sleeping the night! Ever since we switched the routine he’s been sleeping through the night. He sometimes wakes up once in the middle of the night, but usually will put himself back to sleep within 10 minutes. I still wake up when he does, even with the monitors on mute, but no more getting out of bed every night – woohoo! It’s really cute…after reading a book, I lay him in bed and even if he’s whimpering a little, as soon as I put the blanket over him, he curls up on his side facing the wall, pulls the blanket close and is calm and quiet – usually asleep in 5 minutes or so.

The above is another picture from our trip to Astoria last August. This was my favorite picture of that entire trip. The lone bird perched on a railing looking out over the river. The reflection of the sun setting past the bridge shining through a window. The slight hint of sunset creeping into an otherwise clear, blue August sky. The shadows lurking in the corner, waiting for the approaching twighlight.
Tegan Time
Tegan was a happy kitty last night. I managed to spend some quality time with her. She got a much needed brushing – and I think I may have enough fur in the trashcan to provide to some poor cat whose owner thought shaving would be funny.
Simeon Stuff
He slept!! Last night we changed the bedtime routine. In the past, the routine was: dinner, play, bath, feed, bed – where feeding usually put him to sleep and it was just a matter of laying Simeon down and closing the door. However, it’s beyond time that he put himself to sleep. We tried letting him cry a couple times within the last week or so, but after about 45 minutes, I gave in. Last night, the routine changed. The new routine is: dinner, play, feed, bath, story, bed. Once he started falling alseep while feeding, I woke him back up for bathtime. Then, to calm him down again, we read a story before laying down. He only cried for about 10 minutes last night before falling asleep. He then woke around 4am, but was able to fall back asleep on his own within 5 minutes. I managed to sleep from 11ish – 4am, then 4:15 to 6am and I feel so well rested this morning! Please, oh please let this continue.

This weekend was Ari’s birthday gift…a trip to Astoria to eat at the Columbian Cafe. A small place with wonderful atmosphere and food. The above is a picture of the chef taken last August when we first learned of and experienced the restaurant. From the picture, you can see where he cooks from where we sat for dinner last august. I have to admit, I was able to enjoy it much more this time around, not feeling sick from pregnancy. One of the delights of the menu is the Mercy. You choose seafood or vegetarian, your spicy level tolerance, and any allergies — beyond that you are left to the mercy of the chef. I wound up with Petrole (“the cadillac of sole” according to the chef) for breakfast, and Ari had jalepeno-chile smoked oysters for dinner.
Beyond our two meals at the restaurant, we spent the first day at Seaside. A small town attempting to be Coney Island-esque. As Ari pointed out (after seeing the 5th candy shop), if they ever stop receiving their shipment of sugar, there will be riots. Sunday morning, Ari and I checked out Astoria’s Sunday market, then drove down to Manzanita and met up with D, S, J and a couple of their friends. Had a nice lunch then went up to Cannon Beach, saw where D and S got married, then went on a nice little hike.
Yesterday, Ari, Simeon and I went to the Ls for a Memorial Day bbq. It was a nice visit and good to see the whole family – we got there late our last visit and the two kids were asleep. It was also nice to see S and M again after not seeing them for over a year. Hopefully, we can get together with them again soon.
Tegan Time
Not much to say. Tegan definitely missed us while we were gone, but since it was only a couple nights, she didn’t seem to hold much of a grudge.

Had to share this picture, as it’s my favorite Simeon picture from this weekend’s trip. He was so close to actually getting water, though I think I’m glad he hasn’t figured out to bite and suck at the same time. |
