Why??

An acquaintance of mine has been trying to get a divorce for a number of months now…before Simeon was born, I believe.  When I last spoke to her about it a couple months ago, I was told that she had gotten him to sign some papers and that she just needed to wait 30 days for a court appearance.

Apparently there has been a change.

At this point, she just wants the divorce.  The kid barely knows his father because the father doesn’t seem to want to be a part of his life.  She also realizes that the father can’t afford child support, especially having just lost his job, so she is willing to forego child support in order to finalize the divorce and move on (admittedly before he starts taking an interest and realizes some of his rights).  He isn’t against the divorce, but neither is he willing to make things easy for her (if I recall, mostly to save face with family and cultural custom).

Then the government gets involved.  The state somehow chose her case and decided she is due child support and until her court date (now set for sometime in December) she is forced to remain married to him.

Can somebody out there please help me understand this??  The papers are signed, the divorce could have been complete this month.  Then the government gets involved and says he owes you this, even though he can’t afford it and you don’t want it, and the court date to settle this is 6-7 months away.  Until then, you are stuck with each other.  I don’t get it!!!

*sigh*

Tegan Time
Tegan seems to be getting quite used to Simeon.  Anytime Simeon sees Tegan and reaches out to her, I make sure to take his hand before he can get a handful of fur and help him pet her nicely.  Now, Tegan knows Simeon and is not afraid to walk right next to him.  Sometimes she’ll just stand there, expecting somebody to pet her.  Now I just have to hope that Tegan continues to remain in no danger when Simeon can chase her.

Simeon Stuff
Ari has been kind and gets to have bonding time with Simeon while I participate in Tuesday night gaming again.  After Ari shared the events of last night with me, I felt the need to share it with others as well.

Apparently, Simeon managed to sleep for a couple hours between leaving daycare, meeting up with daddy, daddy getting dinner, and then finally the two of them getting home.  Still asleep, Ari decided to just put him to bed, however he eventually woke and was really hungry.  Ari offered him a bottle, but Simeon refused the bottle, requiring solids instead.  Eventually, he started to get upset again…now he was refusing solids but still seemed hungry.  Then Ari remembered what I had told him the night before – after eating the sweet potatoes, he seems to need to wash it down with milk.  A little bit of milk and soon after he was out cold until 2am.

Tegan Time

Tegan Time
It’s been awhile since I’ve given Tegan some space here..she’s overdue for this kind of attention.  Hrm…as I look for a good picture of her, I realize she really has been sorely overlooked recently — this will definitely have to be fixed soon.

So…a Tegan tidbit:  A few months after we moved into the house, Tegan decided to start helping us with housecleaning by washing the inside bottom of the shower door.  I’m not quite sure what prompted this.  I thought there was a separate shower in the previous residence…but it’s been so long I can’t remember for sure.  At first I tried to convince her she really didn’t want to do this, but I eventually gave up and let her enjoy.  Sometime within the last year, she has decided the door isn’t enough.  She now goes for the shower floor.  Again, I tried to convince her otherwise, but to no avail.  It hasn’t made her sick yet, so here’s to cute cat behavior.

Simeon Stuff
I haven’t really provided a Simeon update in awhile.  We started solids awhile ago – first avocado, then bananas and a little over a week ago, applesauce.  So far the applesauce has been the biggest hit, which is fine by me since it’s the easiest to prepare (open can, dump in bowl) — after tasting babyfood at my shower, I’m trying to postpone any store-bought babyfood as long as possible.  Seeing Simeon’s progress in solids, we started having the daycare feed him solids as well.  Yesterday I dropped off some applesauce, which he ate in full by the end of the day.  For dinner, was a new food — pureed sweet potatoes — which seemed to do pretty well.  Since I’m cheating1 with this as well, I’m happy he seems to like it.

I’m also happy he slept really well last night.  He managed to sleep through the 1:30 internal alarm and didn’t wake up until 4am.  Here’s hoping more solids is helping with this and that I’m finally going to start getting better sleep at night on a more consistent basis.

1 When I got to the store, I first went to produce and picked out four yams.  Plan was to make mashed yams for Simeon. Before I left, I decided to check out the canned vegetables aisle and discovered ‘Organic Sweet Potato Puree’.  Noticing it was closeout savings, I bought 4 cans and put the yams back.  Tasted a bit before feeding any to Simeon last night and gave it a thumbs up.  Yay for easy baby food!

Mother's Day

Between a busy week and not having access the one day I had time to write, I haven’t yet had a chance to say how Mother’s Day went.

It was wonderful!

Ari made me a omelet in the morning, and after talking to family, we lounged around for a bit playing a video game.  We wound up playing a little longer than expected, and then it takes a bit for us to get out of the door, so we wound up not having time for the hike we planned to do.  Instead, we ran a couple errands and then headed over to M & A’s for a barbeque.

I can’t thank M & A enough for inviting us to spend Mother’s day with A’s family.  We had a wonderful time.  We ate, we watched A’s nieces play and even get bribed into doing some weeding, walked to a nearby park and all-in-all had a really nice time.

I have a feeling Ari didn’t have much planned otherwise, but he not only accepted the wonderful invitation, he gave up a gorgeous day of bicycling to spend the day with me.  I couldn’t have asked for a better first mother’s day.

To all the other Mom’s out there…it’s a bit late, but hope you had a wonderful Mother’s day.

Birthday Celebration

I’m a little late posting, but happy birthday Ari!

Thursday wound up being pretty low-key as far as birthday went.  We stopped by an art gallery to see D’s display and cheer her on – her first showing in the greater Seattle area and she had already sold two pieces by the time we got there.  Yay!

Friday night was the group celebration for Ari’s birthday.  We had 15 people (including us and Simeon) show up for dinner at Shanghai Garden – a favorite chinese restaurant of ours that Ari’s dad discovered.  After dinner, most of the group came back to the house.  When I finally came downstairs from getting Simeon to sleep, B pulled me aside and we set up the cakes – black forest chocolate, coconut, and mocha.  B then notified Ari his house was on fire and we all gathered in the dining room for a round of singing and celebration.

We haven’t done our celebration of his birthday yet, but that’s because he’ll get his gift Memorial Day weekend.  Since I know he reads my blog tho, you’ll just have to wait to read about it.

Just plain sick of it.

I wound up with a 3-day weekend…unfortunately, that 3-day weekend was spent sick.

Around 12:30 Friday morning, I woke up with Simeon crying.  I got him back to bed relatively quickly, but about an hour later I was up and sick to my stomach – and wound up kneeling before the porcelin goddess practically non-stop until around 6am.  It figures that Simeon would also have a rough night.  Thank goodness for Ari.  Thank goodness for C too, who was able to help us with some last minute babysitting.

I managed to call in sick to work around 9ish – probably only a few minutes after Ari had left.  Well, I called but when my boss didn’t answer, I sent an e-mail.  Thinking it was food poisoning, I thought I would be better by late afternoon and able to get in some work.  Around 2pm I felt I needed to get some food in me, no matter how much I didn’t want anything, because I knew I was dehydrated and needed some milk production to happen.  I managed to get downstairs, but it took another hour to heat up a can of soup…of which I could force only a little down even an hour or two beyond that.

I did better that night, but discovered after Tot Shabbat services Saturday morning that too much motion and I was nauseaus all over again.  With Ari not feeling 100% by this point either, we cancelled our plans to join the playgroup and headed home.  Then, Ari got sick and we had to cancel our evening plans to attend B & B’s house warming – not that I was doing too hot myself.  Funny…I get sick and wonder how many trips to the bathroom I have yet to take; Ari gets sick and worries about the number of calories he lost.  *sigh*

Considering everything, I figure we both managed to get a stomach virus and I’m hoping that it’s done with our house once Ari is finished getting over it.  Today was spent resting.  I was well enough to take Simeon for a walk, but that just about made me feel a little sick again.  How do single parents do it?  I have enough trouble taking care of Simeon alone when I’m healthy (and taking care of the house, Ari and me).  I barely managed to find time to eat anything for dinner last night with Ari totally out of it, me still wearing out easily and having a very bright-eyed boy ready to burst.  I don’t think I’d make it if I had to do it alone…

The Exersaucer

For the last month or two (maybe more) I’ve been watching the inventory of a couple consignment shops in hopes of finding the right exersaucer — something nice, with a good set of toys for a decent price.  I finally started looking on craigslist and found something that would work for an excellent price.  It would figure then, that when we stop by one of the consignment shops for something else in the afternoon, I would find the exersaucer I was originally looking for.  Oh well…Simeon seems quite happy with what he got and that makes me happy.

939 Days…

Updated the list again.  Unfortunately, I didn’t accomplish nearly as much as I would have hoped.  I’m thinking I should have started much smaller…aimed for a 2 month list or something.

Well, I’ll at least get on with a couple other items on the list.  Polling friends for movies and books that I should read.  So…

Please Add a Comment and let me know your favorite book and movie and my goal is to get through at least 10 of each by my deadline.  Maybe I’ll get lucky and have read some of those suggested.

Simeon Stuff
6 month check up last night.  Still hard to believe he’s 6 months already.  Didn’t grow as much as I would have hoped…14lbs 10oz and 2’2″.  Lucky for us, the immunizations helped him sleep.  After a couple stops, we wound up getting home around 8:30 and he had been asleep in the car.  Didn’t wake until 4:15 at which point he was fed and diapered.  He was back to sleep 30 minutes later and didn’t wake again until 6:45.

Cute things not to forget

Tegan Time
When we finally got to the house Sunday afternoon, Ari was not feeling well…lack of sleep and passover food led to a nasty headache and he was headed to bed even before I was finished getting out of the car.  Apparently, Tegan missed us while we were gone and took to vigorously washing his hair and rubbing her chin on his head.  The love of a cat can be so sweet :).

Simeon Stuff
When I checked on Simeon in the afternoon of his first day of daycare, he was laying down and eating.  As he looked over and saw me, his eyes started to twinkle and he got this huge smile on his face.  I can’t even begin to express in words how wonderful that felt.

Yesterday, after picking Simeon up from daycare, he managed to stay awake in the car.  I had a couple stops to make, and as we were getting close to stop number one he was beginning to fuss a little.  Then, just a few moments later, he stopped.  I looked in the mirror and noticed that instead of playing with any of the toys within reach, he was looking down focused on the seatbelt buckle and rubbing his finger over the button.  I swear this kid knows what he needs to do to unbuckle the belt and just doesn’t have the strength to push that button in.

Daycare Day 3

We’re up to day 3 at daycare and Simeon seems to be adjusting quite nicely (tho I’m sure he misses Carrie and her undivided attention :)).  I was a bit shocked when I went to pick him up yesterday and discovered spikey hair.  Apparently one of the daycare staff I hadn’t yet met decided to play with his hair – a little lotion and water and poof…spikey hair boy.

Maybe it’s just me…maybe it shouldn’t have bothered me at all, but I was a bit annoyed.  I won’t go so far as to say upset or angry – just annoyed.  In fact, if it had been Carrie or another good friend, I probably would have simply laughed and found it adorably cute.  But I’m still getting used to the whole daycare thing — somewhat strangers watching my boy — and would have been more apt to laugh if they’d asked beforehand whether or not I cared if they put something in his hair.  As soon as we got home it was up to the bath to get the sticky, smelly lotion out.

Lessons when flying

Lesson 1: Use only one airline to reach your destination

When I booked our flight to KC, I went through Mobissimo.com to find the lowest price.  The search returned a flight that was practically $100 cheaper than the others.  Leave Seattle on Alaskan Airlines at 11:30am arrive in Denver around 3pm; leave Denver on Frontier Airlines at 6:55 and arrive in KC at 9:30pm.  I didn’t think the times were horrible – especially considering we’d have Simeon with us and this would be plenty of time to feed him and get between gates without rushing – so I grabbed it.

Issue #1Alaska and Frontier knew nothing about each other

After checking in and going through security we discovered that our luggage was only checked through to Denver.  This meant, we would have to leave security, get our luggage, then check in for Frontier and go through security all over again.  Well…at least we had 4 hours, though we should talk to the staff and try to get our luggage retagged.  Then Issue #2 crept in…

Issue #2:  Alaska Airlines flight delayed

The plane on which we were to depart arrived at 11:30 along with an announcement – there are mechanical issues and an update will be given at noon.  Ari used this time to get a couple miles of walking in and worked with Alaska and Frontier to try and get our luggage taken care of and get checked in for our next flight.  Unfortunately, both failed.  At noon, the announcement was – still working on plane and looking for another plane we can use, next update at 12:30.  This time, I worked on the luggage issue and at least this time the staff were able to reach the ground crew.  At 12:30 the next announcement – plane is unfixable, only available plane is in San Diego and we will depart at 4pm.  Well…at least now they should have time to find and retag our luggage.

Unfortunately, this means our 4 hour layover is now -1 hours…Ari goes off to try and work with Alaska and Frontier to get us to KC.  Yet again we fail…each airline has a flight heading to Denver around 2:30 but nobody is at the Frontier counter and Alaska has a waiting list.  We eventually get our food vouchers from Alaska and get some food.  We’ll just have to hope we catch one of the later Frontier flights out of Denver.  Frontier has 2 flights leaving for KC within an hour of our new arrival time.

Issue #3:  Alaska Airlines flight delayed again

The plane from San Diego is apparently already claimed, so our plane is an additional 45 minutes late.  At this point, we’re half expecting to stay in Denver for a night…though we have since had confirmation our luggage has been retagged.  At least Simeon has a change of clothes, plenty of diapers and a sleeper.

On the bright side of the whole trip, we wound up sitting next to a nanny who was more than happy to babysit during the flight.  We also discovered we had a lot in common and may get together :).  It was nice having a friendly person next to us and she was very helpful in getting off the plane as we were going to have some running to do.

We arrived in Denver around 8:25pm and prayed that the last Frontier flight was at 9pm and not 8:30. With the help of the nanny, who carried Simeon off the plane for us, we got out and raced to Frontier – which meant the length of the Alaska terminal to the tram, 2 stops on the tram, and the length of the Frontier terminal.  10-15 minutes later, we’re panting at the Frontier gate and telling them our story.  Luckily, there is room for each of us to have 3 or more rows to ourselves and we’re bound for KC, arriving at 11:30pm.

Of course, since we barely made the flight guess what didn’t make the flight.  Our luggage arrived around 4 or 5pm the next day.

Lesson 2: When you have a baby, make sure to have a change of clothes in your carry on

Our flight back was luckily on one airline…Continental.  Although this also turned out to be a special flight because it was operated by Northwest; at least both legs were Northwest operated.  Our flight out of KC was delayed, but we still managed to have 30 – 45 minutes before the next flight was to depart and we made it to the gate soon after they had started boarding.  Unfortunately, this meant we were unable to try and get seats next to each other (we each had center seats 10 rows apart), so we were at the mercy of any kind passengers.  Luckily a gentleman with a window seat was kind enough to move back for us.

When the beverage lady came by, I decided to have some orange juice.  Of course, with Simeon on my lap, the orange juice didn’t even last 5 seconds.  As Ari was being handed his water, my knee was drenched and some of our belongings were a bit damp too.

A bit later, I looked to see a nice big stain on Simeon’s pants.  Being in the window seat, I immediately turned to Ari who would be the lucky one to change him.  After Ari disappeared I noticed my shirt…ugh.  I grabbed a baby wipe and started working.  Nothing so pleasant as to smell like crap on a plane.  Ari returned a bit later with a clean boy…although apparently the diaper had slipped and his butt was perfectly clean…it was just the rest of him and all his clothes that were nasty.

Lesson 3: Don’t buy a smarte cart until you have your luggage

Having 3 suitcases, a carseat, 4 carry-ons (2 laptop bags, a pump and a diaper bag) and a Simeon we knew getting to the car would be difficult so we grabbed a cart and waited for our luggage.  And waited…and waited…until there were no more bags.  As we watched the ‘last bag’ suitcase come out we realized it had happened to us on both legs of our trip…no luggage.

Turns out, none of the luggage from KC made it onto the flight.  While Ari was in the room (with about 15 others) dealing with the luggage, I stood outside pushing Simeon in circles.  At one point, I remembered and poked my head in to tell Ari not to forget we need a carseat.  Apparently, there was another Ari in the room and the two Ari’s got to talking.  This other Ari, had overheard my Ari telling his brother the colorful story of our flight to Seattle with Simeon and immediately called his pregnant wife to tell her what they could expect :).

Eventually, we headed to our car and after a couple stops for passover and food, we made it home.  Around 9pm, we got a phone call.  Our luggage would be home either 3-4 hours later, or if we were willing to be his last stop (since the delivery guy apparently lives on Hwy 18) we could leave a signed note on the door and he’d drop off our luggage at some point in the middle of the night.  We went with the latter option and sure enough, when I woke at 4am Monday morning, it was all sitting on the front porch.

And finally, everybody and everything was safely home.
