The long day of Monday, January 28th 2008

Monday morning was pretty nasty out and Ari’s bus wasn’t running.  Since both Ari and I had interviews to conduct, Simeon and I took Ari to work before heading south.  I was really happy when I pulled up to the daycare and saw it was before 8am, which meant that Simeon should be there in time for breakfast.  However, as we walked towards the building, another mom from Simeon’s class noted that the daycare wasn’t opening until 10am.  So, we headed up to my office until then.

Simeon was an angel.  He played with what few items could be considered toys in my office.  He helped me finish a collage of family pictures for his daycare class.  He quietly ate snack during a short daily meeting.  And it wasn’t until after the meeting and close to 10am that he was starting to get a little restless and want to get at my computer.

I then picked Simeon up early from the daycare so we could get Ari, stop at costco, and get home before it was dark and the streets turned icy.  However, by the time we got home, I’d been in the car for about an hour and had to run to the bathroom – at which point I wasn’t sure if my water had broken or not.  Ari called the hospital while I went upstairs to finish packing.

CIMG3516Neither one of us really thought this was anything more than a false alarm, though we did spend the entire car ride talking about baby names.  At the hospital, after getting checked out, the doctor on call (Dr. C) was pretty much ready to send us home but had a call into my doctor (Dr. L) for his assessment.  After some time and not hearing back from Dr. L, Dr. C decided to check me one more time before sending me home.  Good thing too – we probably would have gotten close to home and then had to turn back around again.  Instead, Dr. C went from saying "if you were my patient I’d send you home." to "if you were my patient I’d keep you here".

Luckily our friend C was available to watch Simeon for us.  Once we realized we weren’t going home without a second child, C took Simeon back to our house and spent the night.  By 9:30, Ari and I were heading for the OR.  And then at 10:10pm on January 28th our new little girl arrived into the world – 6 lbs 3oz, 18.25 inches.

Finally, this morning Ari and I chose a name.

Welcome to the world little Caitlyn Arwen Pernick.  Mommy, Daddy and Big Brother are mighty happy you’re here.

Soccer Mom

I’m getting ever so much closer to that title.  The latest would be the purchase of the ultimate Soccer Mom automobile – the minivan.

Ari and I started looking at cars a number of months ago. When we first started looking, I wasn’t ready for the whole minivan thing.  I knew we needed a large car but hadn’t quite comprehended all of our needs and the reality of what type of car that meant.

So…what did I want in a car?  Something large enough to fit at least two car seats, the two of us, and two out-of-town guests (namely parents) AWD and Navigation system were the big features for me.  Auxiliary port was the big thing for Ari.

It quickly became evident that the size we wanted meant we were looking at minivans or mid-size SUVs.  And, after talking with my boss (who has 4 young daughters), I started heavily leaning towards minivan over SUV.  Especially after he pointed out that in bad weather you can actually get into the back of the car and get the kids ready without taking a step outside.

I also came to a decision that AWD was not just a desire but a must have.  Between a recent ski trip that Ari took and some nasty weather last week, this has already proven to be a smart decision.  (It was wonderful to be able to get out of the house in a situation where my Saturn wouldn’t have been able to get out of the garage.)

These two items alone limited our options to one – The Toyota Sienna.

I can’t say that either one of us was extremely happy that to get these two features in one car we only had one option.  However, it turns out that the Sienna is highly rated by Consumer Reports.  In fact, it’s currently either the top-rated minivan or tied with the Honda Odyssey, which has apparently held that title for a few years now.

I have been quite happy with our new car.  I constantly use the Bluetooth capability.  I try to talk to my parents and Ari’s parents so that Simeon can hear their voices – even if he doesn’t always talk loud enough for them to hear him.  The auxiliary port allows me to plug in my Zune and listen to music or podcasts clearly.  And I absolutely love being able to push a button and have my side mirrors fold in as I pull into the garage.

The biggest difference for me, however, has been how much more comfortable I feel behind the wheel.  In my Saturn, I was so low to the ground everybody’s headlights would blind me and it was only worse in the rain.  Now that I’m up high, I feel much more relaxed again driving when it’s dark – which at this time of the year is to and from work.

So…yeah…I’ve got a toddler who likes kicking balls, kid #2 on the way, and I’ve now got the minivan…what else does it take to be a full-fledged Soccer Mom before Simeon is old enough to join a team?

Christmas Cards from Heaven

Headline read: Dead man sends cards from ‘heaven’

I bit and read the article.

Seems a cute prank had been set up for the last couple decades and Christmas cards were received by a bunch of people from a man who died this past October.

The greeting read:

“I asked Big Guy if I could sneak back and send some cards. At first he said no; but at my insistence he finally said, ‘Oh well, what the heaven, go ahead but don’t (tarry) there.’ Wish I could tell you about things here but words cannot explain.

“Better get back as Big Guy said he stretched a point to let me in the first time, so I had better not press my luck. I’ll probably be seeing you (some sooner than you think). Wishing you a very Merry Christmas.”

What a great sense of humor.

Silly Simeon Stuff

A not totally belated Happy Holidays (Christmas, Kwanzaa, Channukah, New Years (am I missing anything?)) to everybody.

I’m sure there are things I should have blogged about by now but rather than try to figure it all out, I’ll just skip to the real reason anybody reads this blog – Simeon.  A few relatively recent cute things from our resident two-year old that I don’t want to forget.

Incident Report:
About a month ago, I arrived to pick up Simeon from the daycare and noticed there was an incident report for him.  He had a bloody nose during the day.  Apparently, he was walking around with his finger up his nose and tripped. Reading it, I couldn’t help but laugh.  Especially after talking to the teachers and learning that soon after the nose was clean again, he went right back to walking around (in the same area) with his finger up his nose again. *sigh*

Wiggles:
He’s been watching some of his Wiggle DVDs for bedtime recently and seems he’s picked up on their signature finger waggle.  Yesterday, I picked up a few audio cds from the library, including one of the Wiggles.   He discovered it in the stack before I checked out and has been carrying it around with him almost everywhere since then.  Today, I noticed that if he’s trying to let us know that he wants to listen or watch the Wiggles, he waggles his fore-fingers the way the Wiggles do.

Learning words:
A few of the newer words in Simeon’s vocabulary all seem to have a common thread.  ‘Show’ means he wants to watch a dvd or tv show.  ‘Rock’ stands for Fraggle Rock.  ‘Bay’ is Wiggle Bay.  And he’s gotten pretty good with saying the full title of Blue’s Clues.  ‘Game’ has also been added to the vocabulary list – referring to playing a game on the computer.  Generally, if we say no to one he then asks for the other.

Maggie:
Simeon and Maggie seem to be developing a nice relationship.  There are times where Simeon will chase Maggie and, if he manages to catch her, give her a huge bear hug – practically crushing the poor cat – and try to pick her up.  There are other times when Maggie will come close to him while he’s playing with a toy and Simeon bats her away with a ‘No!” so that she doesn’t take the toy from him.  The other night, I went to set up the humidifier in his room after he was asleep for the night and found Maggie curled up on the reclining chair in the corner.

The baby:
I’ve been trying to think of ways to help Simeon understand that there’s a new family member on the way.  One of those is to try and let him feel the baby move.  However, most often he quickly takes his hand back and pulls my shirt back down in a “that’s not decent, mommy!” sort of manner.

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Well, this week it’s actually been kinda nice in our area – though I know Kansas and the East Coast have recently gotten hit pretty hard.  What I’m particularly thinking of, however, is a couple weeks ago when we had our first snowstorm of the season.

I think Simeon had something to do with it.

The evening of December 1, Ari and I were supposed to go to his holiday party.  I was actually looking forward to it.  Got my haircut, got new shoes, planned on getting my nails done, and one of Simeon’s daycare teachers was going to babysit. Then, Friday morning, I picked up a letter addressed to me when I dropped off Simeon at daycare.  The teacher was having to cancel.  Luckily, this was easily fixed by getting in touch with a mom I know in the neighborhood.  Her 14 year-old son was available.  Large family with large age differences between kids – he’s taken care of his 3 year-old brother many times.

Simeon, wasn’t ready to give up yet though.  So, he called on something a little more powerful.  Saturday early afternoon, as we were leaving the synagogue, it started to snow – big thick flakes.  If it’s snowing in Seattle, it’s a bit worrying what it’s doing in our neighborhood, so we went straight home.  Just a couple hours later, the roads were white.

I was kinda hoping to still have the babysitter come over and Ari could do dinner in our neighborhood.  After talking to the mother, we canceled that.  Turned out to be a good thing.  The three of us went out for dinner in the neighborhood.  We had planned to go down the hill near where the babysitter lives. We wound up staying closer to home when we reached the stoplight, looked towards our intended direction and saw 4 – 6 cars with blinking lights on the side of the road.  We had trouble getting back into the garage less than hour later – getting up the hill from the other set of retail or from the highway would have been impossible for us. Next car will definitely have AWD.

So…here’s hoping that Simeon doesn’t realize what’s going on this Friday night – my office party.  Greek restaurant for a nice dinner and live band.  Ari – we have restricted the rights on Simeon’s account so he can’t see my blog yet, right? 😀

Geek in Training

Oy!

Last night, Simeon decided to play a sort of peek-a-boo game with me while Ari was playing a game on the computer.  I sat on the floor in the living room with his pajamas trying to get him to come over and put them on.  He would run into the office, then run back out, look at me, then run back to the office again.  At some point, without a pause in Ari’s game, I suddenly hear the music to Simeon’s Sesame Street game.  I call over to Ari, who informs me that Simeon turned on the other computer and started his game.  I eventually go in, and sure enough Simeon is sitting down playing one of the keyboard games and Ari wasn’t kidding…Simeon went in, climbed into the chair, turned on the computer, clicked the desktop icon to start his game and then clicked through the menus to play a game.  *sigh*

As Ari noted, it’s probably time to create an account on the computer just for him where there’s nothing he can click on except for his game.

I can post again!

So, we updated our blogs and suddenly I was having trouble updating.  Turns out it was probably the fact that my username was changed.  But Ari looked at it for me last night and I am up and running again.

I can now attempt to go back and blog about Thanksgiving, Winter storms, Channukah and the latest adventures of our little geek-to-be.

Overdue Welcome

Beginning of October, Ari came back from Virginia with a new addition to the family – Maggie.  She’s almost a dead ringer for Tegan.  Just a little bigger and a little darker color.  I’m pretty sure that Simeon calls them both TT.  The big difference is age – Tegan is around 15, Maggie is 1.

Maggie seems to be learning a few things from Tegan – namely in sleeping spots.  Last night, for instance, before I went upstairs for the night each cat was curled up in a couple of Simeon-sized chairs.  Then, when Ari and I were both in bed both cats were curled up at the other end.

You can tell the age difference in their demeanor.  Tegan wants to find a nice place to nap when she isn’t eating.  She’s much happier if it’s on somebody’s lap, but anywhere will work.  And she expects that you want her attention just as much.  She’ll walk up to you – just out of arm’s length – and wait for you to pick her up.  Maggie, on the other hand wants to play.  Ari’s mom brought a wand with feathers at the end when she came in October.  Maggie drags the thing around the house.  The other night I wasn’t sure what noise I was hearing until Maggie came around the corner with it.  She’ll play with it on her own if there’s nobody ready to play with.  And when she wants your attention, be prepared to suddenly find a cat on your chest staring at you. She just climbs right up, kneads a nice spot and waits for you to cuddle back.

Last night was actually quite cute.  I woke up to Simeon crying.  After waiting to make sure he wouldn’t just go back to sleep I went in to check on him.  I’m not sure if she was already there or not, but as I turned to get a diaper I saw Maggie curled up at the end of the bed, watching (this weekend we took the mattress out of the crib and set it on the floor).  As nervous as both cats get when Simeon is awake and running towards them, they both seem to expect it is there job to watch over him.

And of course, I can’t forget to note Tegan’s status in the house.  It is still her house. She made sure Maggie was aware of who’s boss when she first arrived.

Happy Halloween!

dragonsaurus1 This year, Simeon dressed up as a Dragonsaurus.  We got a number of “what an adorable dragon!”, “ooh a dinosaur” and even a few “look an alligator.”  Basically, it was the cutest and warmest costume we could find at the party shop last weekend.  The weather is generally pretty nasty, so we wanted something to keep him warm and dry.  Of course, the weather was actually quite nice…he was even getting hot in the outfit in the afternoon.

I tried to take a bunch of pictures, but unfortunately, the two pictures I got with great big smiles on his face are blurry – too blurry to easily fix :(.  dragonsaurus2So the one where you can’t see much of his face will have to do :s.

This year the trick or treating started with the daycare parade.  All the kids at the daycare get dressed up and go around the office complex.  For the younger classes, the kids all put the candy they got into the ‘class’ bags that would later get divvied up between all the kids.  Simeon loved taking a piece of candy and putting it in the class bag. Er…any bag actually, there were a few times where he would put his collected candy in the next container and take a different piece of candy.  The last stop was in front of my building, so rather than going back to the daycare first, we went upstairs to my office and let him collect from some of my coworkers.  I wound up trading his collected candy for a box of animal crackers with one of the daycare teachers (making sure to keep some of the playdough).

Now…our neighborhood really gets into the holiday.  The ‘Church on the Ridge’ sets up stands with hand warmers, coffee and hot chocolate.  There are trailers decorated as castles that shuttle the kids to different places.  And this year, there was an EMT vehicle down the street handing out glow sticks for kids and parents.  And the trick-or-treaters are non-stop.  When we finally got home around 6pm, the doorbell was ringing two seconds after we stepped in the door, without lights on in the entry way or on the porch.  Within 15 minutes or so, we opened up shop and the kids kept coming until we ran out 2 hours later.  Even then we got one more kid (and a parent) with the lights off.  Sometime in there, we got Simeon dressed up again and I took him out.  I had only planned to stop at a couple of the neighbors we know, but Simeon quickly understood the deal and also seemed to understand lights on meant open for business.  So we stopped at about 10 houses total.  At one point, I told Ari he should go check out our neighbors’ coffin (see below).  When he got back he mentioned that our nextdoor neighbors, who have counted kids in the past, gave up counting kids this year and just counted candy.  When he stopped by to say hello they had counted 300-something.  Do note we live on one of the major streets in the community, so we get more traffic than many other areas.  But still…300+!

Highlight 1:  Over the weekend, we saw one neighbor building a coffin.  The older boy dressed up as a skeleton and laid in the coffin last night to scare the kids as they took candy.  He seemed to think scaring kids was quite worth not collecting his own candy.

Highlight 2:  Best costume had to be the mime.  Not so much for the costume, but for his prop.  He didn’t say a word.  Just showed his sign that read “Trick or Treat”.  Then turned it around to display “Thank You.  (Applause)”.

What time is it?

The setting:  Thursday a big wind storm hits and knocks out the power for about an hour sometime in the morning while everybody is out of the house.  Thursday night / Friday morning, I wake up almost hourly because Simeon is having a fitful night.  Friday morning, Ari and I wake up to the sound of Simeon crying and Ari brings him into bed with us.

At some point, Ari wakes me…”We have 10 minutes!”

I look at the clock…5:47.  If we’re going to stop by the coffee shop before dropping Ari off for his 6:20 bus, we have to get out of here in about 10 minutes.  I get up as quick as my tired body allows and start getting dressed.  Ari takes Simeon downstairs.

For most of the week, my mom (and usually my brother) have been awake and downstairs by the time I get there and I just leave Simeon with them.  This morning, I get downstairs and nobody else seems to be up.  I know my dad told me to wake them if necessary, but I hate to do that.  Out of habit, I glance at the microwave and stove clocks…huh, I thought I adjusted those correctly. I turn to Ari, “Let me see if my parents are up.”  As Ari rushes to finish getting ready, I head back upstairs and feebly knock on my parents’ door.  No answer (not surprising since I didn’t try very hard).  I get back downstairs.  “They’re not answering.  Go ahead and get him in the car, I need to run to the bathroom first.”

As I head towards the bathroom, I glance at the cable box.  12-something…I’m sure that was 5 hours off.

Something is nagging at me, so I glance at the cordless phone clock before heading out the door.  4:55am.  I look again at the microwave and stove – 5:03…I am really sure I adjusted those correctly.  I look at the wall clock…just after 5.  I look at the cable box – 12:03…that was definitely 5 hours off.  Blink a couple times and take one last look at the phone clock again.  Grrr….

<meanwhile>

After buckling Simeon into the car, Ari turns the car on to get some heat going.  Clock comes on – 5:04…Good, we have time to stop for coffee…  Wait…5:04?!  Oops.

I step into the garage.  “Um…Ari?”

Ari looks up from the carseat with a sheepish grin.  “It’s only 5 o’clock.  I didn’t reset the bedroom clock.”

“Yeah…I’ll see you inside.”

Not long after getting settled back in the house in front of the fire, my mom comes down.  Eventually, it’s time to go. My dad is nice enough to drive Ari to the bus and Simeon and I manage to get “another” couple hours of sleep.
