Piya's Perspective

Beginning of October, Ari came back from Virginia with a new addition to the family – Maggie.  She’s almost a dead ringer for Tegan.  Just a little bigger and a little darker color.  I’m pretty sure that Simeon calls them both TT.  The big difference is age – Tegan is around 15, Maggie is 1.

Maggie seems to be learning a few things from Tegan – namely in sleeping spots.  Last night, for instance, before I went upstairs for the night each cat was curled up in a couple of Simeon-sized chairs.  Then, when Ari and I were both in bed both cats were curled up at the other end.

You can tell the age difference in their demeanor.  Tegan wants to find a nice place to nap when she isn’t eating.  She’s much happier if it’s on somebody’s lap, but anywhere will work.  And she expects that you want her attention just as much.  She’ll walk up to you – just out of arm’s length – and wait for you to pick her up.  Maggie, on the other hand wants to play.  Ari’s mom brought a wand with feathers at the end when she came in October.  Maggie drags the thing around the house.  The other night I wasn’t sure what noise I was hearing until Maggie came around the corner with it.  She’ll play with it on her own if there’s nobody ready to play with.  And when she wants your attention, be prepared to suddenly find a cat on your chest staring at you. She just climbs right up, kneads a nice spot and waits for you to cuddle back.

Last night was actually quite cute.  I woke up to Simeon crying.  After waiting to make sure he wouldn’t just go back to sleep I went in to check on him.  I’m not sure if she was already there or not, but as I turned to get a diaper I saw Maggie curled up at the end of the bed, watching (this weekend we took the mattress out of the crib and set it on the floor).  As nervous as both cats get when Simeon is awake and running towards them, they both seem to expect it is there job to watch over him.

And of course, I can’t forget to note Tegan’s status in the house.  It is still her house. She made sure Maggie was aware of who’s boss when she first arrived.
