Rearranging

Winter made itself more than obvious when the power outage hit.  the floods and ice earlier in the season were apparently too subtle for Ari and me.  During one of our visits home during the darkness, Ari managed to get the pilot light restarted for the fireplace and get the fire going.  However, the living room was still in the summer arrangement.  The long couch was hogging the heat.  So, we spent a few minutes and moved the couches around.  This was apparently a very temporary arrangement.

New Year’s Day was spent working on arranging this room and reutilizing the furniture.

Before:

Old arrangement (2005) but this is the piece that was the root of the necessary change.  Big, bulky and took up too much of the room – hiding an entire wall.  It also limited our options since things like windows and the fireplace can’t really move.  Though I can’t say that stopped us from trying every possible arrangement.

After:

No more of any one piece taking up too much space.  We can enjoy the TV and the fireplace. And still room for Simeon to play.  I find it amazing how much that wall inset makes a difference to the appearance of the shelving.  That unit is at least 6 inches taller than the one along the red wall.

Wondering what happened to the other tall piece?

The best idea I had all day.  Just need a few more wicker baskets and it will look even better.  Even Tegan approves…

Ari’s best idea is a bit hidden.  He had to remove the bottom shelf of the tv stand to get the speaker to fit.  But he used it to hide the nest of cables behind the stand.

Happy New Year's

Another year has come and gone.  I still insist that there must be a correlation between age and gravity that makes time go by faster and faster as we get older.

Looked back at last year’s resolutions.  Definitely updated my blog more regularly – cross that one off the list! – but the other resolutions still need more work.  Feel the need to have at least one new resolution though.  I prefer something not too specfic, but not extremely cliche either (i.e pariticpating in a triathalon too specific, exercising too cliche); especially when I have my list of 101 to-dos.

New Resolution: Better organization skills!
This is in relation to physical appearances and timing.  This includes keeping the house picked up and looking nice.  This includes making sure we collect our mail and file the paperwork regularly.  This includes making sure we put necessary time towards house responsibilities without taking away from time with family (and vice versa).

To make this one a little easier to handle, I should probably prioritize a few specifics:

  1. Keep Simeon’s toys from spreading throughout the entire house.
  2. Straighten Simeon’s room and keep it looking nice.
  3. Don’t let mailbox build up
  4. File paperwork regularly

There’s definitely more, but these are the starters…

Still a common resolution, I’m sure, but I don’t know if I’d call it cliche.

New Blog Style

Trying out a new layout.  What do you think?

Definitely needs some color…

[Update] Modified the header and I’m working on a bit of color within the navigation and item links. However, it is way past late and a cranky boy with a temperature keeps waking up.  Time to get a little sleep myself.

Hannukah Storm of 2006 – some history

Contacted a coworker the Monday of the power outage to request she feed my fish.  She commented, that if the outage had happened on Christmas (or any other federally recognized holiday for that matter) the storm would have been labelled as “Christmas Storm of 2006”.  Alas, it hit the night before Hannukah – and who would even consider labelling a massive power outage storm after the Festival of Lights.  I mentioned this to a few friends and noticed they were now referring to the storm as The Hannukah Storm of 2006 on their blogs.  Maybe this will catch on.  Hah! I’m not nearly that influential.

I did find the timing of the power outage and projected recovery timeline to be quite…ironic.  There was even a small part of me that wanted the power to return an hour after sundown on Saturday, just as Hannukah was coming to an end.

For those who don’t necessarily know the story of Hannukah:

King Antiochus comes to power and begins oppressing the Jews – requiring religious assimilation by way of temple desecration, idol worship and death.  A desire for revolt began to grow and the Maccabee family led the forces to defeat the government.  Following the victory, steps were taken to rebuild and rededicate the temple.  A tradition of the rededication ceremony is the lighting of the N’er Tamid (eternal flame) in the temple.  Only enough oil to last one day could be found, but miraculously it burned for eight – enough time to prepare a fresh supply.

I did manage to learn a little something while looking for a basis of my little summary.  One tradition of this holiday is the dreidel game – a gambling game played with a little square top.  As a means to continue to study Torah under Anthiochus’ rule, Jews would play gambling games with a top to conceal their activity.

Each side of the dreidel displays a hebrew letter – Nun, Gimmel, Hay, Shin.  Turns out these letters have more than one meaning:

Meaning 1 (the meaning you learn as a baby): these letters stand for the phrase “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham”.  “A great miracle happened there”.

Meaning 2 (new to me): they also stand for yiddish words Nit (nothing), Gantz (all), Halb (half) and Shtell (put).  This corresponds with the game rules – do nothing, get all of the goodies in the pot, get half the goodies in the pot, put goodies into the pot.

Learn something new everyday…  though Israeli dreidels have a Peh instead of a Shin for “Nes Gadol Hayah Po – A great miracle happened here.”  Wonder if there’s a yiddish word beginning with Peh that means ‘add to’…

Hanukkah Storm of 2006

First it was flooding – which brought in Red Cross relief, then it was ice – which shut down most of the Seattle area for a day, and last week it was wind – which cast over a million people into the dark.

Last week’s itinerary:

Thursday 11pm: power goes out

Friday morning: still no power. Ari heads to work, but no lights on anywhere between house and office.  Eventually he comes home.

Friday afternoon: accept C&Ks offer to stay in front of a warm fireplace.

Friay night:  light the menorah – first night of channukah. pasta dinner cooked over an outdoor firepit.  sleep in front of the downstairs fireplace.

Saturday: learned more about power outage.  about 1.5 million without power Friday morning.  According to this Seattle P-I article:

“Local residents called it one of the worst storms in memory. Meteorologists said it ranked among the most severe storms in the record books.”

brunch is pancakes and eggs cooked over the firepit, then off to meet MK at the Brown Bag Cafe – now with restored power.  accepted MK’s housing offer after checking up on Tegan.  House is cold, neither the gas fireplace nor stove are lighting.  exchange numbers with the neighbors.  sleeping graduates to a futon.

Sunday:  find out timeline for power recovery:  tuesday night best case, wednesday most likely, friday latest.  call neighbors – update them and request a sitter for Tegan.  remember i need my laptop for work and wind up going home.  ari gets fire and stove lit and we rearrange furniture – i inform the neighbors.  accept B&Bs housing offer – graduate to a room with a queen bed and our own bathroom.  arrive to find a menorah set up and hosts excited to light candles – extremely touching considering they are not jewish (though B does have a jewish family history i believe).

Monday:  new power recovery timeline:  friday to saturday.  simeon still can’t go to daycare (been exploding too much since thursday) so no work or daycare.  help our hosts prepare for their pizza party in the evening.  have other housing offers, but stay put for simeon’s sake – thank goodness for wonderful friends.  C even brings over the highchair in the evening.

Tuesday:  updated timeline:  potentially tuesday night. ari takes our hosts to the airport and then goes by the house.   turns on fire and stovetop for warmth, cuddles with tegan, visits the neighbors, cleans out the fridge and unplug electronics.  simeon is doing wonderfully and daycare is a go. receive call around 8pm that lights have returned along the parkway.  another call around 9 or 10…still no lights at home.  email around 11pm from the mayor (who lives a couple blocks down the street) power has returned.

Wednesday:  7am call from the neighbor that power is back!  i was out of bed but not totally awake and she could hear it in my voice.  Ari packs some and heads home after lunch to clean.  i clean out the freezer later that night.  We all finally get to sleep in our own beds again.  Yay!

THANK YOU!
I want to extend a thank you to everybody who offered their homes to all of us – Ari, Simeon, Tegan and me:

  • C&K – friday night in front of a warm fire with a means to eat warm food.  C then later brings over the highchair to our latest residence in Bellevue.
  • MK – saturday night on a futon with electricity and an extremely irritable boy (2 hours to put down and 1 hour of screaming middle of the night)
  • B&B – Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights with our own room and bathroom.  Offered to have us bring Tegan and let us house sit while out of town
  • MV – not only invited us to his one-bedroom condo, but offered to sleep on the couch and give us the bedroom.
  • A&M – offer a room in their house with electricity, hot water and friends
  • RC – offered a warm bedroom and a suspension of the ‘no electronics in the living room’ rule
  • M&S – not only offered a downstairs bedroom to us, but having already accepted another offer, offered the room again to Tegan.
  • M&D – I think M was out of town, but D offered a spare room, and also offered to host Tegan.
  • D&J – though not much room available and a busy schedule, D offered a kid-friendly place with a friend for Simeon.
  • L family – offered room in their kid-friendly house with a couple of playmates for Simeon.

I apologize if I have missed anybody else’s offer.  Feel free to remind me so I can add you to the list.

Not the Channukah I expected, but I don’t know how much warmer and brighter it could have felt.  As much as I’m looking foward to finally opening the channukah gifts our family sent, I continue to be reminded how lucky we are to have such wonderful friends.

Tegan's new exercise regimen

Tegan is 14 years old, long-haired and white.  If she had it her way, she’d find a piece of nice, dark clothing somewhere, curl up and sleep all day with periodic breaks for meals in bed.  Unfortunately, Ari and I brought home her personal trainer 13 months ago.

Simeon and Tegan have spent the last year getting to know each other.  They have gotten so close that Tegan will oversee Simeon’s playtime and bathtime to make sure all is up to standard, and will even act as bodyguard when deemed necessary.  Likewise, Simeon inspects Tegan’s food and toys to make sure everything is safe.

Now that a year has gone by, however, Simeon has determined it is time to get down to business.  Anytime he isn’t eating, inspecting rug fringe, reading a book or taking a play-break, Simeon is helping Tegan get in her aerobic exercise.  Through the kitchen, around the great room or up the stairs – if Tegan isn’t moving, Simeon makes sure she does.  On a few occasions, when Tegan thinks she has time to take a break, Simeon rushes over and reaches out.  Tegan then understands her break is over and starts walking again.

The two continue to watch out for each other, but Simeon intends to keep Tegan an active cat.  Goodness help her when he’s up on two feet and learns to dive attack.

Simeon and the Orange Room

A week ago today, Ari and I met the teacher for the Orange Room at Simeon’s daycare (moving up from pink to orange).

The transition we set up was:
   * Day 1: one hour
   * Day 2: an afternoon
   * Day 3: see how he does for a full day

With all the snow, we stayed at home Tuesday and Wednesday, so I figured Day 1 would start with Thursday.  However, there was some confusion when I discovered his name was no longer on the pink room sign-in sheet.  We decided he would go over to the orange room – at least until another teacher came into the pink room.  He wound up staying most of the day.  He lasted the full day on Day 2, though he did get a bit upset when he looked into the pink room a couple times.  It’ll be interesting to see how he did today.

I’m not totally surprised at how quickly he’s taken to the new room – mostly because he knows a bunch of the kids in there already having played with them in the pink room.  It was still a cute shocker, however, at his lack of reluctance to go run and play.  Day 1, it took me no more than 2 minutes to turn around and get some diapers for the orange room and he was off and playing before I turned around again.  On Day 2, he hugged my legs as I was heading back to the door, but it was a simple goodbye – he let go and turned around to play with the table of water without me taking a step.  Similar behavior this morning – hug my legs when he sees me heading for the door, but ready to play before I actually leave.

Not to Forget

I haven’t had time to blog the last few days, but there are a number of things that make me say, “I need to blog about that.”

So, while I don’t have time to blog it right now, I at least wanted to start a list of things to not forget about…

1. Simeon and the Orange Room
2. Tegan’s new exercise regimen
3. Ari’s holiday party
4. 100 goals in 1001 days update
5. Ladies night out
6. Playgroup party

I know there were a couple of quotes that were quite amusing too, but well…now you know why I’m writing this list.  Hopefully, I’ll have some time later to get started on the list.

Pictures

We updated our online picture albums last night.  Including pictures of yesterday’s day of ice.  Below are my favorites.  Enjoy.

A friend referred to him as my copilot, but I’m thinking he’s more of a first-class passenger.

That’s Mt. Si in the background.

I just thought this plant seemed covered in snow picture-perfectly.

As Ari was slowly making his way back home from the airport.
