Puzzlehunt

This past weekend was Puzzlehunt.  36 hours of puzzle-solving where the first part is to figure out what the puzzle is (i.e. here’s a deck of cards, send in your answer).

Ari managed to join a team a number of years ago – I think I was still living in Renton.  I got a phone call asking me a television question.  He then suggested I drive up to Microsoft, have some dinner and help them out.

The next couple years, we formed a team with a bunch of friends.  Unfortunately, that didn’t last.  I think the biggest issue was that only 3 or 4 people were willing to commit their entire weekend.  15-18 hours into it most of the team had called it quits for the night and we were never sure just how many would show up again the next morning.

A couple years ago (when the home security system salesperson was pulling out all the stops in hopes of making a sale) Ari was called by somebody from TLA, a Puzzlehunt team that generally places in the top 5.  Not having enough friends interested in forming a team of our own that year, Ari had listed us on the ‘Looking for a team’ DL.  He accepted their invitation for both of us.

The first thing that struck me was how organized they were ahead of time.  They had cheatsheets for all different types of encryptions (morse code, semaphores, braille).  They decided ahead of time what restaurants we’d order from and had everybody choose their meal by Friday.  They made a grocery store run and brought in a fridge so we didn’t even need to run to the kitchen down the hall.

Then there was the level of committment.  There were people who had to leave for a couple hours here and there.  And people took naps at night when they couldn’t go on.  But there were never less than 9 or 10 people working on puzzles at any given time.  Anybody not walking distance from the building slept in another room. There was no question that there would be 11 or 12 people working when our hunt was done.

In the past, our team had never even had a chance to figure out clues to the meta puzzle.  With TLA we solved all but 3 or 4 puzzles before completing the meta puzzle around 8am or 9am.

This year, we received another invitation and we quickly accepted – having missed last year (a 3 week-old baby boy, who shall remain nameless, prevented us from participating).

While the team didn’t place as well this year as in year’s past, I am extremely happy with my personal contributions.  Last time I left feeling quite useless.  I even wondered if my invite this year was purely for need of a 12th person and as a tag-a-long with Ari.  While I can’t remember anything specific that I did last time, I definitely pulled my own weight this time around.

Having missed the first couple hours taking Simeon to D&J’s house, I started off by joining puzzles already in progress and offering a fresh point of view.  A number of times I popped my head in just in time to provide that last bit of insight needed to solve the puzzle.  Eventually, I had the nerve to work on a fresh puzzle – a very different paint by numbers puzzle.  Managed to see that one (as well as two others) from start to finish.  I even managed to get a breakthrough on a puzzle that had stumped a number of us throughout the night.  Another 15 minutes and we would have solved it.  Instead, the team managed to break the meta puzzle answer without it and we finished in 7th out of 75 teams.

All-in-all I really enjoyed this year’s puzzlehunt and can’t wait for next year’s.

Simeon Update

The boy is on his feet!  Just need to get a better video (I suggest you right-click and save target as…) now.  Apparently the whole walking thing is making daycare much more enjoyable for him.  The look of joy on his face as he wobbles across half the room is so infectious.

The hunt for a babygate for the stairs has just become that much more of a priority.  Not that we shouldn’t have had it already.  He’s gotten pretty proficient at climbing up and down the stairs.

This coming weekend is Puzzlehunt and our friend D has graciously offered to babysit for us.  Not just for the day, but overnight.  I’m most nervous about bedtime.  Once he’s there and mom and dad aren’t in sight, he’ll be fine.  I just don’t know how smoothly bedtime will go – or the next morning.  He’s not yet fully putting himself to sleep.  I generally end up staying in the room with him as he settles down in the dark.  Hopefully any crying that may erupt will not wake J.  Along those lines, while he generally sleeps the night, being in a strange place may have an effect.  If he wakes himself up at home, most of the time he will just go back to sleep — unless he winds up in a sitting position, in which case Ari or I eventually go in and lay him back down.  He has been sleeping later in the morning the last week.  That’s been nice.  If all else fails, Ari and I will at least be available to go over should he not willingly settle down – though I don’t really expect it to come to that.  Most of the time my worries about him are not necessary for any other purpose than to drive myself crazy.  Comes with the whole mom territory I guess.  My mom still worries about me.  If she only knew some of the stuff I’ve done…oh – Hi Mom! 🙂  *sigh* Even the daycare he spent the day at Tuesday (not his normal daycare) said ‘he got along with teachers and friends alike.  He’s welcome back anytime!’  I just need to get through this and see how it turns out.

Recent cute story:
Simeon spent some time with our friend C the other day when Ari and I had an appointment and needed an emergency sitter. Our friend C has two adorable cats – we’ll call them Jayl and Terck.  Terck is the outgoing one. He won’t necessarily approach you quickly, but he will definitely be interested in checking you out at some point – or at least won’t run away should you get anywhere close to him.  Jayl is a bit shyer.  He’s mastered the art of avoiding people – darting up the stairs in a black blur in an effort to get away.  Apparently only myself and one other friend have had the honor of giving him a body massage.  Well, until recently that is.  Apparently not only did Simeon get the opportunity, but he made good use of it and may have even made a new friend.  Terck, however, wasn’t so lucky.  Instead of a nice, soothing massage, Terck had to fight to keep his fur – fur still attached to him.

Makes me wonder if Simeon knew what he was doing.  If he realized he could be rougher with Terck and still have future opportunities, but not so with Jayl.  I doubt it, but it’s nice to think we have a little genius.

Life

It really is amazing how much life is just a neverending cycle.

When you’re little, every new movement or expression is applauded and cheered.  You get help with everything from eating to diapering.  You don’t just age from 4 to 5 – you go from 4 to 4-and-a-quarter.

For many, the same can be said when time catches up with us.  When our bones are stiffer and we can’t take care of ourselves as easily.  When we reach an age that isn’t yet a common age to reach.

When we are little, we look at everything with excitement.  Everything is fresh and new and meant to be examined and explored.  At some point, this seems to stop.  We no longer get standing ovations just for taking a step or peeing in the toilet.  We no longer look forward to adding that next digit to our age with the same zeal.   We take all this for granted – until we lose it or realize how close we are to losing it.  Then every breath becomes sweet and everything and everyone around us becomes a gift to treasure.

I was reminded of this cycle of life yesterday.  Something made me think of my friend Mike and I remembered that the anniversary of his death is just a day away.  I remembered this as I was looking in my fish tank getting ready to leave the office.  I remembered this as I stared at a baby swordtail I hadn’t seen the day before.

Hrm…

I feel like I’m getting behind in posting.  I made a list of things to post about some time ago, but now those feel out of date.  If there was something particular I meant to post about those events, I have since forgotten.

Friday was Hawk-U.  An annual office training event.  Yet again, they provided nice logo-ized items – blankets and USB thumbdrives.  I think they did a pretty good job this year.  You can always find something to complain about if you want, but overall the classes and Friday night event were interesting and entertaining.  Hawkeye is working on finalizing the merger of the three Hawkeye companies – logo, tag line, etc.  The new logo doesn’t seem to be a hit with the people I’ve talked to so far.  If the employees aren’t thrilled, what will the clients think?

Simeon Stuff
I’ve already posted about Simeon taking his first steps.  However, he’s smart enough to realize there’s a learning curve to walking.  “Crawling gets me places really fast.  Why on earth would I want to stand up and go slower?”

Moving on all fours is not the only thing he’s learned from Tegan.  After a morning of play with D&J, Simeon did not want to take a nap yesterday.  Eventually (1 – 1.5 hours later) we made our way back downstairs.  After a little more food, Simeon went to visit Ari in the office.  Simeon then closed the doors, stared up at daddy who sat him on his lap and Simeon was asleep within minutes.

Here’s hoping something interesting actually happens soon…

Image Editing

I saw a nifty article detailing how to make an image pop-up out of bounds.  The above is the ‘before’ picture.  Below is the ‘after’.  How’d I do?

Cruising Part 2 – The Escape

I heard about the snow storm while on the cruise.  I didn’t realize just how bad it was – until I got back home.  I hear from coworkers they were sitting in traffic for 4.5 – 5 hours or walking home uphill in multiple inches of snow.  Where was I?  Enjoying the highlight of my trip – that beach in Antigua.

What else did I do on my trip?

San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Realized once on shore that I stopped here on my other Carribbean cruise.  It was raining last time, so we only walked the pier before returning.  This time Ari went walking with his dad, while my parents and I took Simeon for a stroll and a bit of shopping.  I had hoped to catch a horse and carriage ride with Ari after dinner but they were shut down by then.  Instead, we took a nice walk, just the two of us.  Found a couple stores still open – including Chavin Cotton.  So soft and comfortable and light.  There was an adorable hooded sweatshirt for Simeon with animals, but a) it was white and b) it was hand-wash.  That’s all I need to say.

St. Thomas.  This island is for experiencing oceanlife or buying jewelry.  My dad took the opportunity to go scuba diving.  Ari’s dad went for a walk on a Water Island.  The rest of us went jewelry shopping.  The district is littered with jewelry stores, but Ari’s mom discovered Omni years ago and continues to go there.  Even Simeon got a piece this time – an adorable ID bracelet from Ari’s mom. I wanted to take Simeon to a beach that afternoon, but did not plan accordingly.  I would make sure to rectify that.

Antigua.  We made up for not taking a taxi tour of San Juan and missing the beach in St. Thomas.  A 2.5 hour taxi tour showed us the island of Antigua.  We stopped at all the major tourist highlights and Ari, Simeon, my dad and I stopped at the beach for awhile – as I may have mentioned…

Tortola.  Went on a dolphin excursion with my mom.  Quite disappointing.  I expected at least a little show.  All we saw was fellow cruise travellers getting to play.  Got back to the ship and then stuck to the local shopping area.

Nassau, Bahamas.  This had the feeling of used car salesman.  Every type of transportation available and doing what they can to get you to use it.  Had to go through an obstacle course, just to get beyond the entry area.  After a quick walk in the nearby shops, Ari, Simeon and I went off to Paradise Island in search of a beach.  After asking directions 5 or 6 times and walking, what seemed, half a mile.  We finally made it.  Not as nice as Antigua.  Rough waves, cold water, and more people than beach.  Simeon played in the sand a bit, and very quickly Ari and I were ready to head back.

Cruise / At Sea – Most of the cruise was spent in the cabin or in the dining areas.  Managed to get into a hot tub a couple times and get through most of my book.

Ft. Lauderdale – After saying goodbye to my in-laws, dinner was at Ben’s with S&B and my cousins S&R.

I’m definitely getting a better idea of what I want to do on these islands.  Next time, I’ll get a tour of San Juan, get in the water and get more jewelry in St. Thomas, hit the beach in Antigua, check out some hiking in Tortola and either experience Paradise Island village or find another part of the Bahamas not trying to be commercialized America.

Ordering a birthday cake online

I found a link to this image and was amused enough to share with Ari and his brother.  His brother, then pointed me to the background story.   Too funny.

Cruising Part 1 – kid friendliness

Back from my Carribbean cruise.  Ready to go back.  Specifically to this nice beach on Antigua with soft, white sand, clear, calm waters and small, silver fish dancing at my feet.

Overall it was a wonderful vacation – though the cruise didn’t blow me away as the others have before.  That’s probably not a fair comparison.  Having Simeon with us really changes things.

Simeon did wonderfully on the cruise.  If there were any doubts whether he would get seasick, they were quickly erased after he withstood what mommy couldn’t – even when he wasn’t feeling well.  Yes, poor Simeon spent 2 days not feeling well.  When he finally released what he’d been bottling up, the smile was back though.

Thank goodness for doting grandparents.  Ari and I were able to see all the evening shows (except when we slept through them) and even spend a few evenings alone.  Simeon went to most of the shows as well.  As long as the music and lights were going and there was action to be seen, he was in to it – until he eventually fell asleep.  One evening, he had just about fallen asleep but couldn’t get comfortable.  Then the music got loud again.  He shot straight up and was too interested in the show to even attempt sleeping again.  He kept pushing me away when I tried to lay him back down or even protect his ears from the loud sound level.

Carnival cruiseline is known for being family friendly, so I had high expectations that Simeon would have places to be and things to do.  Apparently, I missed the fineprint that defined a kid as being 2 years or older.  They had this wonderful area called Camp Carnival.  Camp Carnival had 2 rooms for kids to play in with toys and activities geared towards different age groups.  However, 1-2 year olds were only allowed in at certain times.  Either late at night when babysitting was available for a charge (luckily we had plenty of grandparents willing to do this for free), or from 12-2 while we were at sea, under family supervision (a total of 6 hours the entire cruise).  With so many opportunities for broken glass, I felt confined to my cabin more often then not.

I was also disappointed that there was no pool or swim area for diapered kids.  So we wound up with only 2 opportunities for simeon to get anywhere close to water (well, other than the shower).

Also, if this cruiseline is so kid-friendly, why do they have so few cribs that there’s a waiting list?  I was overall disappointed that we got so little out of this cruise for Simeon and we still had to pay his way as if he were at an age where he could actually take advantage of what the ship had to offer.  You can bet we made sure he had an appetizer and main course every night.  He even ate a piece of chocolate cake on my mom’s birthday. Well, I’m still not sure how much got into his mouth.  They must have had to throw out that tablecloth.

The one bright spot for Simeon was our dinner waitress.  She was amazing – going above and beyond what I would expect.  Even on the days when Simeon wasn’t feeling well, she managed to get at least a tiny smile out of him.  Not only did she get his hand for a couple dances, but she went so far as to cut up his food and feed him a couple times.

At the time, I grew extremely frustrated with how much time I spent in the cabin versus out on the deck or in a pool.  But as I think back, it really didn’t matter.  If Simeon was happy, I was happy.   Maybe I didn’t read as much as I would have liked, or gotten in the pool/hot tubs as much as I hoped.  I probably spent more time with my parents and in-laws than I would have otherwise.  So, maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

I like the idea of doing this with both families again.  And maybe we’ll even try Disney – another cruiseline said to be kid-friendly.  At least now I know what questions to research when looking for a cruise Simeon will enjoy.

Vacation!

I seem to have kept pretty low key about my vacation.  In truth, it kind of snuck up on me.  It just didn’t feel real until I was worried about being late for the plane.  We managed to get a few hours sleep and only oversleep by 15 minutes.

This vacation included a cross-country flight from Washington to Florida – 4 hour flight Seattle to Chicago and 3 hour flight Chicago to Ft. Lauderdale.  First flight was ok, but Simeon eventually wanted to be crawling around.  Ari and I took turns walking the aisles, and he eventually napped about 20 minutes.  Second flight went through turbulence most of the way and we were confined to our seats too often to do any walking – and Simeon was quite done with the lack of wandering room.  I was even turned away from the bathroom when I wanted to change a dirty diaper.

We did eventually make it to Florida though and my parents were already here to pick us up.  Ari’s parents came in this morning and after visiting with Ari’s cousin this afternoon (great to see S but unfortunately B wasn’t feeling well), and the Goldmans for dinner (all 5 of them – B&S look happy, R&S surprised us by not going to DisneyWorld and baby B is so adorable.)

And now I should be sleeping.  Tomorrow morning we board the Carnival Liberty Cruise Ship for an 8-day Carribbean cruise – woohoo!  Apparently we had to buy a full ticket for Simeon so you better believe he’s going to be eating a LOT on this trip. 🙂

I have to say the family is fabulous. The sun is superb!  The warmth is wonderful. And I am very happy.   I shall return in 8 days or so…

Not just the first day of the year

January 1st 2007 – Simeon takes his first steps

Not the best proof, but he’s working on perfecting it.
