Potty steps

Looks like we’ll be going on another family cruise vacation this coming January.  Apparently there’s a group for 3 year-olds on this cruise that Simeon can join…if he’s potty trained.

Unfortunately, Simeon hasn’t shown that much interest.  He sits on the toilet at school in part because all of them do.  He sits on the toilet at home when Ari and I manage to convince him to.  We’ve tried underpants a couple times so he can feel the nastiness when he has an accident.  Absolutely nothing.  Poop…pee…doesn’t matter to him.  He’s generally to focused on his current activity to notice.

However, we do seem to have something of a breakthrough!  I had Simeon go to the potty when we got to daycare this morning and…he actually peed after sitting down! Granted I still had to change his shorts…but he did it.  And then, he managed to do this again in the evening.

Woohoo!  January might happen!

Climbing up and moving down

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I really try to avoid kids sleeping in bed with Ari and me.  What little sleep I then manage to get is not restful at all.  Last week however, Caitlyn managed to convince me to take her into our bed.  How?  After hearing her make some noise in the middle of the night, I go to check up on her and find that she’s standing up with help from the crib railing.  I discover her this way twice…

I haven’t seen her pull herself up much beyond that, but that was enough for me. I’d really rather not be woken by her crying only to discover she’s found her way to the floor.

Dora addict?

Overheard while Simeon was playing with a toy…

“Say map! Say map!” <pause> “Louder!”

Soccer Mom – officially

I finally came to the realization that I’ve officially become a soccer mom.  Signed Simeon up for soccer classes a couple weeks ago.

Minivan…check
2.5 kids[1]…check
at least one kid in soccer…check

I am not to be confused with a hockey mom, though – I don’t wear lipstick[2]

[1] in my formula, 2 flat-faced Himalayan cat = .5 kids
[2] please don’t confuse me with a pitbull either

Sharing

Yesterday morning, I tried getting Caitlyn to nap in her crib for a bit after falling asleep in my arms.  Unfortunately, the transfer her woke her up.  I left the room for a moment with Caitlyn upset in her crib.  When I returned she was standing up with her hands on the railing.  Time to lower the mattress.

And now the real test of Simeon being a good big brother begins.  Caitlyn has quickly figured out that whatever brother is playing with is more interesting than any other toy available.  Yesterday, Simeon pulled out his laptop and was playing with it when Caitlyn crawled on over.  I hear ‘No! Mine!’ and look over to see Simeon trying to move away or push Caitlyn’s hands away.  I tell Simeon to move onto the couch where she can’t reach.  He does.  Two seconds later I hear ‘No! Mine!” again.  I look over and see Simeon trying to push Caitlyn’s hands off the couch as she tries to pull herself up.  I convince him that she won’t be able to interrupt his toy even if she stands up but we can easily see where things will be going in the near future.

I was talking to a mom yesterday about sharing between older and younger siblings.  It is very easy to tell the older sibling they need to share but then turn around and say another toy belongs to their younger sibling.  I do try to watch myself and keep a balance.  If Simeon is playing with a toy or reading a book and Caitlyn comes over, I try to redirect her.  If/when that fails, I try to remove her from the situation.  Similarly, if Caitlyn is playing with something and Simeon wants it, I tell him he needs to wait his turn and find something else.  Or, quite often I convince him he needs to give her something else in return.  And, if there happens to be multiple of an item, I try to get them both to share.  The next number of months should be quite interesting, as Caitlyn’s mobility continues to increase.

speedy

Two weeks ago today Caitlyn officially starting crawling and she is fast!  She’s also mastered the art of sitting up by herself.

Now, she’s already starting to show interest in pulling herself up to her feet.  At this point I expect to her be walking before end of year.  Here’s hoping Simeon is potty-trained by that point too.

sound sleeping

You know your son is a sound sleeper when he sleeps right through a car alarm going off…your car alarm going off…in the garage…with all the windows down…and he’s in the carseat.

On the move

Sunday morning, I walked into the family room and Caitlyn was happily playing on the floor.  I left to drop something in the laundry room, returned and she was sitting. I haven’t seen her repeat the feat yet, but I’m sure that’s only days or less away.

Sunday evening, I saw her take a couple of crawling steps – actually using all four limbs to move around the family room.  Last night, I saw her do it again – for a longer period of time and further distance.  More specifically, I watched her traverse half the length of the room to get to me.  If she’s half as fast as her brother was when he started crawling we are in trouble.

Reading

While watching Word World this evening, I paused at certain points so Simeon could spell the word on the screen and then read it.

So first is the introduction of duck.  I pause and Simeon reads: “D-U-C-K, Duck!”

Next is the introduction of sheep.  I pause again and Simeon reads: “S-H-E-E-P, Sheep!”

Finally, Pig and Ant build a barn.  I pause one last time during the show’s opening and Simeon reads: “B-A-R-N, Pig House!”

Watching the Olympics

Watching the countries enter the stadium for the Olympics, Ari eventually runs upstairs and gets a map of the world.  The hope is to find each country with Simeon.  Simeon however, is over playing on the computer.  Ari’s attempt to get Simeon’s attention is to ask him where Taiwan is.  This fails – though Caitlyn was all over the map – literally.
